Exploring Library Skills in My Practicum Journey

As I embarked on my practicum journey, I was filled with excitement and a bit of nervousness. The world of libraries has always fascinated me, and now I had the chance to dive deep into it. This experience was not just about observing; it was about actively engaging with the community, learning new skills, and understanding the vital role libraries play in our society.


Throughout my time in the library, I discovered various skills that are essential for anyone looking to work in this field. From cataloging books to assisting patrons, each task taught me something new. In this blog post, I will share my experiences and the skills I developed during my practicum.


Understanding Library Cataloging


One of the first skills I learned was cataloging. This process involves organizing books and other materials so that they can be easily found by patrons.


I spent hours learning how to use the library's cataloging system. I learned about the Dewey Decimal System and how it helps classify books. For example, I discovered that books about history are often found in the 900s section.


Cataloging is not just about numbers; it is also about understanding the needs of the community. I had to think about how people search for information. This skill is crucial because it ensures that patrons can find what they need quickly and efficiently.


Assisting Patrons


Another important aspect of my practicum was assisting patrons. I quickly learned that libraries are not just about books; they are community hubs.


During my time at the library, I helped patrons with various tasks. Some needed help finding books, while others were looking for information on specific topics. I learned to ask the right questions to understand their needs better.

For example, I assisted an elderly patron who wanted to learn how to use email. I walked them through the process step by step, and by the end of our session, they were able to send their first email. This moment was incredibly rewarding and reinforced the importance of digital literacy in our society.


Building Relationships


Throughout my practicum, I learned that building relationships is key in a library setting. I had the chance to interact with various staff members and patrons.
