This blog documents my weekly experiences during the library practicum for my college class, specifically created to reflect on my learning and growth as a future librarian.

Interview with Melinda Brinkley
(The Library Branch Manager)

Interview - 11/5/2025
As a student pursuing a degree in Library and Information Science, I am deeply engaged in understanding the role libraries play in fostering community connection and promoting literacy. Key concepts in this field include user-centered service, information literacy, and community outreach. Through my interview with a library supervisor, I aimed to learn about the practical applications of these concepts in daily library operations and the challenges faced in navigating the evolving landscape of technology and user needs.
1. What’s your favorite way to connect with library patrons? Any tips for someone new to making those initial interactions a bit less intimidating?

“I always try to greet people with a smile and hopefully make them feel welcome. Libraries are for everyone. Even when someone is having a bad day, I have found that being kind, patient, and friendly can turn it around. I focus on listening to what they are asking for, clarifying (because many times people don’t know what they want), and then finding it, or, if I don’t have it, connecting them to it through ILL or placing a hold.”
2. Are there any surprising books or genres that you've noticed patrons are really into lately? What are your go-to recommendations for different age groups?
“I have noticed lately, and maybe it is that we just left October, but there are a lot of gruesome movies that people are checking out, and also lots of murder, true crime, and mysteries. I think this is always surprising for me because I scare easily and avoid scary stories.”
3. What’s the most memorable library program or event you’ve hosted? I’d love to know what made it a hit and how you keep the creativity flowing!

“My most memorable event was my first Spooktacular at the Katherine Tyra library. Everyone on staff wanted to help me. It was such a beautiful team effort. We had games throughout the library, manned by different staff and volunteers. I had 1 hour to set it all up, and I organized it across three carts, so I could go around the library and have everything in place when we opened. It ended with a costume parade, and the kids and parents loved it. Afterwards, the staff who are rarely thanked for all they do shared how much it meant to them to be thanked over and over again by the parents. It was a fantastic event, and I loved my coworkers for their support, and they were a massive part of why it was a success. “
