Learning the Library Card Creation Process

This week at the library I had the opportunity to practice the process of creating a library card. The process is done through the software, Workflows. My supervisor explained each function and why accuracy is essential. We followed each step for creating a library card, learning to collect a patron’s name, address, pin, code word or mothers maiden name, (in case they forget their pin) contact information. (through a written application) and identification to verify their credentials, and then entering that information into the system. I followed the processes step-by-step, with structure and a clear focus, and with greater emphasis on the explanations behind each step.

A Fulfilling Experience in Patron Service

The most impactful and fantastic part of the whole experience was creating an actual library card for a patron when I was given the chance to enter the data step-by-step and be guided by my supervisor. I double-checked every piece of information I entered and ensured I was entering it correctly. She also gave me simple tips here and there to make the process easier for me. This really helped keep me engaged with the process and to feel supported. When I was done, we gave the patron their library card, and I proudly showed it to him. I realized how fulfilling this job could be and how great libraries are in connecting people to resources and information. This particular moment was one of the most rewarding of my practicum so far and was a great representation of the skills I developed and can take with me into my career.
